2011 Food & Wine Festival Part 1

Who: Rich and Kathy
When: October 5-8, 2011
Where: Hyatt Place, Lake Mary, FL
Why: Rich’s job interview

Do you remember the Will We Move Back to Florida? trip report? And how the answer was no – even though when we visited the Orlando Shrine, we heard the whisper that yes, we would be moving back? Well, we’ve just moved back and it’s time to catch you up on our trip reports, meaning, the Food & Wine Festival. For those who do not know, the festival offers mini bites to pair with cocktail sips as you stroll around World Showcase Lagoon. All Ears has more information here.

We didn’t think we’d make it to the festival this year because we’d gone to Disney World in May and Disneyland several other times. But when Rich was asked to fly to Orlando for a job interview the first week in October, I went with him and we snuck in a day at the Festival. He got the job, we moved cross-country, and we even managed to get in a second round the last week of the festival. So, here are some of the highlights from Part 1:

We always start in the direction of Mexico. On our way, we stopped off at Argentina for the Beef Empanada, Grilled Beef Skewer with Chimichurri sauce and picked up a Frozen Dragon Berry Colada in the Caribbean, added a Ribeye Taco and took them to the Cantina to enjoy our finds. The man sitting next to us asked where we got the skewer. Guess it looked pretty good to him, too.

We made our way to China, one of our favorite booths, and I tried the Black Pepper Shrimp with Schuan Noodles (yum, yum – my favorite). Rich had the Pork Pot Stickers. We try to share items, but Rich is allergic to shrimp, crab, and lobster, and I love shrimp so we get different samples then.Germany is a favorite stop and we always get the Sausage in a Pretzel Roll, Apple Streudel, and a German Pilsner.

At Singapore I had the Shrimp Cake and Singapore Street Noodles, but skipped the Singapore Sling. We had the Sling last year, but didn’t like it at all. I’ve had the original in Singapore, and it should be served in a tall, cool glass. See the difference in the pics?

It started raining pretty hard about now so we ducked into Rose & Crown and had a couple of Boddington’s. What a fun, lively crowd – didn’t spoil the day at all – in fact, it was a highlight.

When the rain let up, we stopped off at Ireland and I had the Lobster & Scallop Fisherman’s Pie. Hey, it sounds like I’m doing all the eating but when I had Shrimp or Lobster, I do believe Rich had an extra beer. 🙂

And for our last stop, we had the Tres Leches Verrine paired with Moet & Chandon Imperial Champagne at the Desserts & Champagne booth. We still had $30 on our card and we wondered if we’d get back to the Festival before it was over.
