Adventures at Animal Kingdom

We needed some Disney fun and so we’d made an ADR at The Wave for Friday night. Well, all day Friday there were reports of a week-end deluge of rain and lightning from Tropical Storm Debby and the T-storms started Friday afternoon. So that plus the fact that Friday after work, we’re really too tired to make the drive, so we canceled our plans. We hoped we’d find a window of opportunity sometime over the weekend, although the forecast didn’t sound that good.

Saturday morning we got up and it was cloudy but dry so we drove over to Animal Kingdom to see how much we could do before the rain started. The CMs we chatted with were all predicting 1 p.m. and since the crowds were light, they imagined we could get quite a bit done before then.

Now we haven’t been to Animal Kingdom in years. The last time we were in AK, we were meeting up with our California/Colorado friends for dinner at Rainforest Cafe and when we’d arrived, it was raining so hard, we skipped the park and waited for them at the restaurant.

We headed for the Safari – the wait said 20 minutes – and I don’t think we even waited that long. Rich gets the biggest grin on his face when he rides the Safari – he is so cute – he loves animals so much, this ride just makes his day! After his illness, it was so good to see him back to normal, smiling, and having fun!

We were seated in the front row behind the driver and had a blast! She was great! Especially when we were stopped cold because a giraffe refused to stop chewing on a branch – he must have stood there for ten minutes – finally an animal attendant drove up and encouraged him to move – lol!

Our safari continued – we must have seen every animal except the male lion – cheetahs, elephants, warthogs, lionesses – it was awesome! And the best part of all – no more “Little Red” story – lol! So tell me this – how many years ago did they drop this and we had no idea? Ha!

After the Safari, we walked around, enjoyed looking at other animals, like these tropical birds.

And then we made our way to Yak and Yeti. We were definitely getting hungry! Our Disney friends have talked about this a lot – I mean, they are Yak Attack Royalty. So when the waiter recommended his favorite cocktail, I said, “No, I’ll have the Yak Attack. My friends really love that one.”

The food was really good, too. You can read Rich’s report here. But what a find! Suffice it to say this is one of our favorite eating/drinking venues in all of the parks!

The CMs encouraged us to finish up our day before the rains came at 1:00 p.m. so off we went. We walked by Expedition Everest – I’d taken a look at it years ago when it was new, but Rich hadn’t even seen it up close. I figured if Rich wanted to ride it, I’d go but I wasn’t too thrilled over the prospect – once I turned 40, I lost some of my passion for roller coasters – lol! But Rich took one look and decided, he’d lost his, too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Then we were off to Dinosaur – we hadn’t ridden this in years either. And last time we thought it was a weaker version of Indiana Jones at Disneyland. But the last time we rode Indy, oh my goodness, it nearly killed our backs, mostly because the back support seemed nonexistent, as if the back rests on the seats were too low. But we had no problem on Dinosaur and wondered if the ride vehicles are different. Or maybe it was because we were seated in the back row and the support backs were higher?

I searched on the internet and I see no differences in the vehicle so now we’re wondering why it felt different. Have they altered the ride vehicles for Indy since we last rode them. We don’t see any evidence of that – we last rode it in 2008. Anyway, if the vehicles are the same, this is good news for riding Indy because after the last time, we didn’t think we’d survive it again. ๐Ÿ™‚

We stopped in a few shops on the way out. It was just about 1 p.m. and we got a few sprinkles, but that was all. It was a pretty nice day in the park – we enjoyed the cloud cover because AK can get quite hot when it’s totally sunny out. The rain began in earnest on Sunday so we were even happier we’d jumped at the chance to have a fabulous day at AK on Saturday.

We really must pay more attention to Animal Kingdom – it was just the best ever and it really surprised us. There’s so much more to do and we’ll have those things to look forward to on other visits. Really, the only way it could have been better is if we were staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge or if some of our friends were there to enjoy a Yak Attack with us. ๐Ÿ™‚

I think they got rid of “Little Red” earlier this year so you’re not too far out of the loop on that one.
